British maritime company Kraken Technology Group (KTG) has announced a partnership with MSI-Defence Systems (MSI-DS) around key systems on its K50 KRAKEN maritime gunship. UK-based MSI-DS is a land and naval weapon systems specialist with more than 120 years of experience in the defence industry. Specialising in precision engagement, weapons direction, remote situational awareness and hard kill on a range of host platforms, MSI-DS has developed cross-domain weapons platforms and control systems for naval, land, and littoral environments.

This partnership agreement reflects many areas of collaboration and development between both parties, specifically the integration of MSI-Defence Systems Seahawk Compact Weapon Station (CWS30) and LMM launcher (CWSM) into the K50 KRAKEN maritime precision engagement vessel. This will meet fast interception and interdiction requirements of navies, border forces and law-enforcement agencies.

Nippon Paint Marine has reported substantial interest in its AQUATERRAS® antifouling system following growing evidence that cruise ships are returning to service after lengthy lay-up with hulls completely free of biofouling.

After full application of AQUATERRAS to a pair of cruise ships in early 2019 and 2020, followed in mid-2020 by subsequent pandemic-enforced 18-month anchorage, in-water inspections in late 2021 found their hulls were in conditions that exceeded expectations.

Photographs taken of the coating on hulls on other cruise ships, bulkers, tankers and containerships laid up in the Philippines, Bahamas, La Spezia and the Sea of Marmara – areas known as being particularly challenging – also showed areas of “excellent antifouling performance”.

“Prior to the Covid-19 outbreak, we had two full hull AQUATERRAS applications on cruise ships,” said John Drew, Director, Nippon Paint Marine in Europe. “Now, demand is growing, and we have had to increase production to meet that demand.”

The biocide free coating was introduced to the market in November 2017.

Typically, antifouling paints rely on a certain amount of ship movement to kick-start their fouling control mechanisms. During the pandemic cruise ships set to sea or left their moorings only to make fresh water, which did not provide enough operational activity to activate the antifouling process. That leads to the risk of fouling, especially in warmer waters,” he said.

Ships coated with silicone-based paints, hard coatings and regular SPCs (Self-Polishing Coatings), including the company’s own top-performing A-LF-Sea range, were unable to compete with the performance of the AQUATERRAS coated hulls. Extensive growth build up was often commonplace during the Covid hiatus.

“Some cruise ships had so much fouling when they started operating again that they suffered vibration as well as significant drag and excess fuel-consumption. However, despite extensive idling and static operation in warm and temperate waters, this coating kept the hulls of these ships extremely clean,” said Drew.

With some big players in the cruise sector rolling out technology upgrades to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions, the coating is seen as being very much part of a shipowner’s emissions abatement strategy.

“One major cruise line underwent stringent test programmes for over four years before its first ship’s hull was fully applied with the coating,” affirmed Niko Yamanoue, General Manager, Nippon Paint Maine (Europe). “In-service performance monitoring gave the operator confidence to apply AQUATERRAS another ship just before the pandemic hit. It kept the hull clean even during the biofouling challenges of the pandemic.”

Aside from the fuel and emissions reducing potential from a ship with zero fouling, what is particularly remarkable about the performance of the self-polishing paint is that it contains no active biocides.

Johan Wilckens, Managing Director, Nippon Paint Marine (Europe), said: “It has an extremely smooth and glossy finish.  It’s much easier to apply than a silicone but its smoothness, self-polishing and resistance to fouling combine to lower hull friction. The Covid pandemic has proven the coating’s performance even in static conditions.  The product goes beyond compliance but also its performance goes beyond our expectations.

“We anticipate it will become the benchmark eco-friendly antifouling, allowing ship-owners to reduce underwater cleaning, save fuel, lower carbon emissions and mitigate the ecological damage from biofouling and species migration. The technology in this coating is way ahead of its time. AQUATERRAS gives us a ten-year head start on the competition.”

In addition to a number of major cruise brands that are specifying antifouling for application to a number of vessels this year, the self-polishing coating is being viewed with interest by some of the world’s largest container lines and navies.

According to Wilckens, there are several navies currently carrying out static and dynamic tests as the operational requirement of naval vessels means they are often idle or alongside for extended periods.

“Just like commercial vessels, naval vessels need to keep their hulls are clean otherwise they could be prevented from entering territorial waters, ports and harbours for environmental reasons. Other ship types, such as containerships, will follow.”

Until then, the cruise sector looks set to continue to lead the way and invest in biocide free antifouling technology.

“It can give those early adopters the edge in a hugely competitive sector,” said Wilckens.  “It not only strengthens their green credentials but illuminates the way forward for operators of other vessels across all maritime sectors.”

Following modifications to some of its existing heavy lift vessel fleet, enabling them to transport containers, P&O Maritime Logistics is introducing a Red Sea service, connecting Jeddah and Port Sudan. The service will be operated in partnership with DP World group sister company, Unifeeder.

By establishing this new route using the modified Multi Carrying Vessels (MCVs), P&O Maritime Logistics aims to help reduce regional port congestion, as the MCV vessel type can call at smaller berths, and turnaround faster, compared to larger vessels on this shortsea route.

According to the company, shallow draft MCVs utilise less space and can access areas of the port where larger ships cannot fit due to their size and length. This is useful when connecting feeder ports, such as Port Sudan, with hub ports, such as Port of Jeddah.

P&O Maritime Logistics began modifying MCVs following successful trials with the Topaz Lena, one of two ships that will be deployed on the Red Sea route. The other is the Topaz Volga. The company is modifying a further two vessels and could have as many as ten modified upon request.

Sperry Marine has launched its newest digital solution, Sperry Marine Vessel Performance, developed in collaboration with ABB.

The service enables vessel owners to collect and analyse onboard data in real time, supporting efficient fuel usage and regulatory compliance, while optimising voyage routing.

The new solution relies on several modules of the ABB Ability OCTOPUS – Marine Advisory System, such as motion monitoring and forecasting, performance monitoring, and access to a web-based fleet portal where vessel data can be visualised and analysed onshore.

The Sperry Marine Vessel Performance solution provides a digital decarbonisation tool to help vessel owners achieve maximum fuel efficiency in compliance with upcoming regulations such as the IMO’s Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII).

By continuously visualising the expected vessel motions along the planned route, the system also contributes to vessel and cargo safety, enabling the crew to select a route where maximum allowable motions will not be exceeded, resulting in most efficient and optimised route.

Sperry Marine Vessel Performance is the latest in a series of digital initiatives designed to connect bridge navigation systems with remote maintenance and voyage support services. ABB’s Vessel Performance modules are deployed and managed through the SperrySphere intelligent navigation platform, a one-stop, back-of-bridge digital platform which manages delivery of a wide variety of applications.

Sperry Marine Vessel Performance delivers the Sperry Marine vision, setting a course towards safer, greener and more efficient navigation with a roadmap of remote support and diagnostics of navigation equipment, maximising vessel availability and optimising voyage performance.

The digital platform connects the vessel with its managers using IoT in real time to transform data insights from the vessel into decisions which in turn generate business value, providing evidence in case of cargo insurance claims and demonstrating regulatory compliance.

GSL reported that the new charters comprise a first period of five years, followed by two 12-month periods at the option of the charterer, and are scheduled to commence between late 2023 and late 2024 – following the expiration of existing charters to a different counterparty.

The charters are expected to generate average adjusted EBITDA of approximately $13.1 million per ship, per year, and total adjusted EBITDA of around $393 million for the six ships over the firm charter period.

As of 30 August 2022, GLS owns 65 containerships, ranging from 1,118 to 11,040 TEU, with an aggregate capacity of 342,348 TEU.

“We are pleased to announce that we have chartered these high-quality post-Panamax containerships at rates that reflect the current market, but particularly the long-term need by liner operators for these well-specified vessels,” said George Youroukos, Executive Chairman of Global Ship Lease.

“These new forward charters provide a significant extension of our contracted revenue streams through nearly the end of the decade, and we are delighted to deepen our relationship with Hapag-Lloyd.

“So far this year, through three charter extension options, one prompt fixture, and eleven forward fixtures, we have added almost $920 million of contracted revenues, and we continue to pursue additional attractive, long-term employment for our in-demand fleet.”

The new devices will supply location data based on GPS, measure ambient temperature within the container, and monitor any sudden shocks to it. They also integrate energy-harvesting technology and low-power consumption techniques.

E1 Marine, a global renewable energy company, announced today that its M-series methanol to hydrogen generator has received Approval in Principle (AiP) for marine applications from the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) Maritime Administrator on any vessel type.

Quickly following the AiP from Lloyd’s Register in May 2022, the AiP from the RMI Maritime Administrator provides further confirmation that e1 Marine’s technology has the potential to become an important player in developing and delivering low-carbon energy to international maritime markets and is accelerating its development and growth on a global scale in line with demand.

Norwegian Prima, the lead vessel of Norwegian Cruise Line’s (NCL) new Prima Class cruise ship series, has been christened in Reykjavík, Iceland.

Built by Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri, the newbuild is 965 feet (294 meters) long and more than 143,535 tons with capacity for 3,100 guests at double occupancy.

The ship features a three-level go-kart racetrack, waterslides, expansive pool decks and infinity style pools, and a multimillion dollar outdoor sculpture garden

The first of six in NCL’s Prima Class, Norwegian Prima, along with its sister-ships, will form the backbone of the future NCL fleet. Deliveries are scheduled through 2027.

Norwegian Prima will depart on inaugural voyages to Northern Europe from the Netherlands, Denmark and England beginning September 3, 2022, before making her way to the U.S. She will then sail voyages to the Caribbean from New York City, Galveston, Texas, and Miami in October and November before settling into her homeport of Port Canaveral, Fla., and Galveston, Texas for the 2023 and 2024 cruise season.
