CREWEXPRESS STCW REST HOURS SOFTWARE - Paris and Tokyo MoU have announced that they will jointly launch a new Concentrated Inspection Campaign (CIC) on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) from 1st September 2022 to 30th November 2022

Safetytech Accelerator and Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub are pleased to announce their partnership with two companies, TYMLEZ and Authentix, selected to undertake a feasibility study on the assurance of green fuel in the maritime industry.

The global maritime industry currently contributes 3% of global CO2 emissions. While the industry has taken steps in recent years to reduce its carbon footprint, major change is still needed to meet the industry’s goal of a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

There are different possible avenues industry players can investigate to reach these ambitious targets: transitioning to fuels with lower greenhouse gas emissions such as green ammonia and hydrogen is one of the most promising ones. Greener fuels have the potential to power the next generation of container ships and tankers with one of the biggest barriers to their adoption being assurance: How can buyers of fuel that is sold as being “green” be assured that it was produced, transported, and handled in a truly green way?

Recognising the need for verified green hydrogen and green ammonia, Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub and Safetytech Accelerator identified around 30 companies with interesting technologies which could play a role in assuring the well-to-tank supply chain for green fuels. Five finalists were invited to take part in a pitching contest, of which two companies, TYMLEZ and Authentix were selected and offered partnerships.

The objective of the partnership is to conduct commercial feasibility studies to determine how the two companies can play complementary roles in assuring the greenhouse gas footprint of these new low carbon fuels.

Between August and November 2022, TYMLEZ will focus on the feasibility of guarantee of origin solutions to verify the production of green fuels for the maritime industry. In parallel, Authentix will concentrate on the tracing of these fuels throughout the maritime supply chain using their chemical markers.

The technologies presented in the two studies will help industry to understand what role could be played by human intervention and how these can be minimised as we strive for net-zero. They will also contribute to a better understanding of how standards in the certification green hydrogen and green ammonia in the maritime industry could be developed in the near future.

TYMLEZ is a pioneer in the development and delivery of carbon reporting and guarantee of origin solutions built using blockchain technology. TYMLEZ provides solutions for complex industrial applications that can guarantee the origin of green resources including green fuels such as green hydrogen and green ammonia.

TYMLEZ CEO Daniel O’Halloran said “The partnership with Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub and Safetytech Accelerator is exciting as it will allow us to help shape the future of guarantee of origin for the maritime industry globally. Being selected for this project is a sign of confidence from these respected organisations, and we look forward to working closely with them.”

For over 25 years, Authentix has been the leading global authentication solution provider serving over 20 national governments and major oil companies through managed fuel integrity programs on five different continents. Authentix provides environmentally safe, covert fuel marking technologies along with cloud-based information monitoring systems to prevent illicit trade and enable clients to track real-time compliance in fuel supply chains for quality assurance and revenue optimization.

Authentix Vice President Jim Seely commented on the partnership, “Authentix is excited to be selected as a key partner for this important project for the Maritime industry to reach its goals of overall reduction in carbon emissions. As these innovative green fuel sources are utilized, it will provide a substantial impact towards that cause. We will endeavour to be on the cutting edge of technology development ensuring these new fuel sources can be properly verified and tracked by industry and government to prevent illicit trading and adulteration in the future.”

Charles Haskell, Decarbonisation Programme Manager at Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub had this to say, “Whilst the shipping industry looks to alternative fuels, the lifecycle impact of these fuels must be taken into account rather than pushing the emissions upstream. This presents a challenge when verifying the fuels for shipowners, ports and regulators. This study is aimed to demonstrate that technology is available to determine the traceability and impact of the emissions in producing these fuels.”

Maurizio Pilu, Safetytech Accelerator’s Managing Director commented: “Technologies which can support the assurance of supply chains are evolving rapidly and are starting to be adopted in many sectors. Through these two connected feasibility studies we hope to show how they can be applied to the important area of assurance of greener fuels in shipping and stimulate more innovation and entrepreneurs to help the maritime industry move towards net-zero.”

Reports from Croatia indicate that the start-up company Storylines has entered into a formal construction contract with Brodosplit for its planned resident ship. The delivery date is reported as 2025.

The company reported previously that it had selected Brodosplit for the construction of what they promise will be a revolutionary approach to the residential cruise ship concept. The ship, known as the Narrative, has been in engineering and development for the past few years as Storylines marketed its residents. Reporting indicates the starting price is $1 million rising to as much as $8 million for the individual residences. A limited number of rental apartments are also available with a starting price of $647,000 for a 24-year lease. Total sales revenue of the project is valued at $1.5 billon.

Only one ship has succeeded in launching the residence at sea concept, although several others have explored the idea or tried to market the concept. The World (43,000 gross tons) entered service in 2002 with 165 private residences, although the company requires all the owners to have a full-time residence on shore. Several cruise lines, including Crystal Cruises when it was owned by Genting Hong Kong, proposed incorporating residents as a part of their next generation of cruise ships, only to later abandon the idea. Currently, MSC Cruises however is launched the residence concept as an element aboard its new cruise brand Explora. The company recently said it would increase the number of residences on its third and fourth cruise ships as well as order two more cruise ships all to be built by Fincantieri. The inaugural cruise of Explora I is scheduled for May 2023.

Storylines approach calls for a large passenger ship increasing both the number of residences and the amenities that will be available. The ship will be at least 55,000 gross tons and 741 feet in length. There will be a total of 547 residences aboard each with a private balcony. The crew will reportedly number 450 to provide a full range of services. The design is for a dual-fuel ship that will operate on LNG.

Storylines points out that their concept has all the features of a modern cruise ship but also unique amenities designed for the residence concept. They are saying the ship will feature 20 bars and restaurants, a theater, communal spaces for residents to gather, and a marina to provide a sports platform and dock for watercraft while the vessel is anchored in port. Other cruise ship-style amenities reported include pools, a fitness center, spa, running track, and even a bowling alley.

To support the residences, Storyline says the vessel will have features similar to a small city. This includes everything from an aging clinic to a hospital and a school. There will be office spaces available for working people who are in residence as well as a library, bank, and post office.

“We’re delighted to be partnering with such a respected European shipyard that has a long history of building high-quality passenger ships,” said Storylines CEO Alister Punton in the company’s press release.

The order comes at a critical for Brodospilt. The shipyard found itself caught this spring in the European sanctions again Russian financial institutions. They had a construction finance loan for new expedition cruise ships underway at the yard, but they were unable to draw on the lines due to the sanctions. The company sought the assistance of the government and was forced to begin a pre-bankruptcy process. The yard has suspended employees working on the projects until the financial issues can be resolved.

The Narrative would be the largest and most complex cruise ship built by Brodosplit. They have recently been building smaller cruise ships for the expedition market. They also built assembly blocks for some of the large Fincantieri cruise ship projects. Those blocks were sent to Fincantieri to be incorporated into the cruise ship construction.

Reached by the Croatian media, management confirmed that the construction contract has been signed saying they were hopeful Brodosplit would soon be able to withdraw its bankruptcy petition. Tomislav Debeljak, CEO of the company’s parent company DIV Group, confirmed that the order has been signed. He said technical work is proceeding and he believed that construction work would start shortly.

North Star’s new UK built hybrid powered daughter craft, the first of its type specifically designed for the offshore wind market, has been launched at a naming ceremony held at the RoyalNorfolk and Suffolk Yacht club in Lowestoft, adjacent to the firm’s regional operations hub.

The vessel was christened ‘Grace Darling’ in honour of a famous lighthouse keeper’s daughter from the North East of England who risked her life in 1838 to save the stranded survivors of a wrecked merchant ship travelling from Hull to Dundee. Her life changed dramatically after her feat of bravery made the front pages of the national press and was reportedly read by Queen Victoria. A RNLI museum to mark her life was established in Bamburgh, Northumberland, in 1938.

The VIP event was attended by a number of the UK’s leading offshore wind developers, after the daughter craft was delivered ahead of schedule to further performance and field operations readiness, prior to the firm receiving the planned early delivery of its service operations vessel (SOV) mothership to the Port of Tyne early next year. This will include a performance analysis and enhancements programme on the daughter craft, as well as crew familiarisation.

The Grace Darling is the first of four hybrid craft being built by Alicat Workboats for the leading offshore infrastructure support vessel operator. The full fleet, developed by sustainable naval architect specialist Chartwell Marine, will all carry the names of iconic women from The North East of England’s past to reflect the firm’s first offshore wind projects being supported out of the region, as well as its ongoing commitment to hiring locally and investing in the area’s supply chain companies.

Daughter craft support the safe transfer of in field wind farm technicians between the SOV, where they live while working offshore, to the wind turbines to undertake routine or remedial maintenance. They are also used for trips to and from shore with deliveries.

Matthew Gordon, North Star CEO said: “We are very pleased to have officially launched the Grace Darling and bring the world’s first offshore wind hybrid propulsion daughter craft to market. There is a long history of iconic women hailing from the region, and we wanted to enhance their legacy by naming our new green fleet in their memory as well as commemorate our local roots.

“Our unique model has been purpose designed and built under North Star’s guidance to deliver high performance and quality client service logistics after our extensive market research revealed that no existing model came close to what we want to achieve. The Grace Darling is the first of our next generation and new breed of sustainable, reliable, comfortable fleet that will deliver substantial value and efficiencies to our wind farm clients.

“We fully support the UK’s ship building industry and we are very fortunate to have a wealth of talent on our doorstep in The North East. We are 100% committed to investing in the local supply chain where possible to help drive forward our continued growth in the UK and European offshore wind markets.”

The new hybrid propulsion daughter craft deploys research and development conducted as part of the Carbon Trust’s Offshore Wind Accelerator programme with the aim of reducing carbon emissions and improving performance. The vessel has been extensively tank tested for enhanced sea state operability and safe transfer, providing improved comfort and operational safety for technicians.

North Star has the largest daughtercraft fleet in Europe, which is set to rise from 63 to 67 assets in the next 12months as all four hybrid powered craft for offshore wind are delivered. Withstrategic locations in Lowestoft, Newcastle and Aberdeen, the business employs 1,300personnel, including 100 deck and engineering cadets enrolled in its three-yeartraining programme, now in its 26th year.

ClassNK has issued an Approval in Principle (AiP) for the design of a large-scale liquefied carbon dioxide (CO2) carrier developed through the Research and Development Project from NEDO by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL).

MOL has launched research and development (R&D) on the adoption of a large-scale liquefied CO2 carrier in response to a call for proposals by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to complete the conceptual design, under a project entrusted by NEDO to Japan CCS Co., Ltd. (JCCS).

The vessel design is one element of NEDO’s “CCUS R&D and Demonstration Related Project/Large-scale CCUS Demonstration Project in Tomakomai/Demonstration Project on CO2 Transportation”. The large-scale liquefied CO2 carrier developed by MOL is intended as a practical solution to the need for long-distance transport of CO2 on a scale of 1 million tons a year, based on NEDO’s vision to implement CCUS technology by 2030.

ClassNK carried out the design review of the LCO2 carrier developed by MOL based on Part N of Rules for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships incorporating the IGC Code. Upon confirming the conformity to the relevant rules, ClassNK issued the AiP for the design concept of the said carrier.

ClassNK will actively continue to take part in advanced initiatives toward decarbonization and also support the decarbonization of the entire maritime industry by incorporating the knowledge gained through collaboration with front runners into rules and guidelines.

Approval in Principle (AiP):

At the initial stage of designing or before the specific target ship to be implemented is decided, the design is examined based on the existing regulations such as international conventions and ship classification rules, and an Approval in Principle (AIP) is issued as proof of conformity with requirements. It also prevents the rework of regulatory aspects in the post-process, shortens the examination time at the time of class registration, and can be used as a technical basis for the external appeal of the design status.

Passenger travel will be introduced on a trial basis, as an addition to the existing freight service between the two ports. For the first time, DFDS will offer tourists a direct link between South-East Ireland and Northern France. The new service will be focussed on car and motorhome traffic at launch, with limited capacity to complement our freight traffic.

DFDS is looking for a Marine HR Manager

Chris Parker, route director, said: “We launched a freight service between Rosslare and Dunkirk in January 2021 and it has proved extremely popular with customers looking to move goods between Ireland and continental Europe without the need to use the land-bridge via the UK. Adding passenger services to the route will further strengthen the service and we expect strong demand from holidaymakers in Ireland and in Northern Europe. Rosslare is at the heart of the ‘sunny southeast’ and a short drive from Dublin and Cork, making it a very popular destination. Irish customers will benefit from a direct link into the heart of Europe.”

Crossings on the route will take 23 hours and 45 minutes, with the overnight sailings providing an opportunity for customers to relax and recharge before driving on to their holiday destination. Against the backdrop of a looming summer of disruption at airports, the launch of the new route offers a stress-free alternative for holidaymakers looking to getaway. No luggage restrictions apply when you take your car to Europe by ferry.

DFDS is looking for a Marine HR Manager

There will be up to five sailings per week from Rosslare to Dunkirk and prices for a car and four passengers with a standard cabin onboard will start from €550, with all meals included.

The barge would receive ammonia that has been transported by ship as a liquid and then regasify it for the gas to be sent to an onshore pipeline. NYK would provide the project management and decide on the base design; NSY would work on hull design and layout; ClassNK verification of safety and guidelines; and IHI on the discharging process.

“The parties will promote R&D with the aim of becoming a solution for introducing ammonia fuel mixed combustion to coal-fired power plants that domestic electric power companies are currently working on,” a joint statement said.

Meanwhile Singapore’s Jurong Port has come together with , Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Asia Pacific (MHI-AP) and JERA Asia in inking a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly explore establishing a 100% ammonia direct combustion power plant on Jurong Island.

MoU involves conducting a study into 60MW class gas turbine combined cycle plant fueled by 100% ammonia is planned to be set up to produce carbon-neutral electricity, as well as provide ship fuel for bunkering.

“We feel this MOU could help pave the way for encouraging the adoption of hydrogen in Singapore through aggregation of demand across multiple sectors, mainly the power sector and the maritime sector, thereby addressing the chicken-and-egg conundrum of infrastructure versus demand needs for maritime and domestic power generation,” Ooi Boon Hoe, Chief Executive Officer, Jurong Port.

Jurong Port is also a member of the Castor Initiative which is aiming to develop ammonia-fuelled vessels by the middle of the decade. The other members of the initiative are MISC, Lloyd’s Register (LR), Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), MAN Energy Solutions, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), and Yara International.

MISC plans to invest in an ammonia-fuelled vessel as part of the initiative while Singapore’s MPA aims to develop the ability to fuel such a vessel in two – three years.

As Seatrade Maritime News reported last week Singapore shipyard group PaxOcean Engineering and bunker vessel operator Hong Lam Marine have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bureau Veritas (BV) to develop an ammonia bunker tanker design.

Some in the industry, however, have expressed concern over the safety of handling ammonia as marine fuel and its toxicity if there is a spill.
