Dubai-based port operator DP World will jointly study with Fesco, Russia’s largest intermodal transport operator, the technical and economic conditions for developing a new container berth in Vladivostok, in the far east of Russia.

Michele Labrut | Sep 08, 2021

The new berth will help to expand Vladivostok commercial seaport as a major transhipment hub connecting cargo from countries in East Asia to North-West Europe via the Northern Sea Route.

It follows an earlier agreement between DP World and Rosatom, Russia´s state Atomic Energy Corporation, to explore sustainable development of the Artic route.

Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, signed the agreement at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok with Andrey Severilov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Fesco.

“DP World supports President Vladimir Putin’s vision for the Northern Sea Route, which is one of the last great trading routes in the world to be developed. Opening up an alternative route to the Suez Canal between East and West will increase the resilience of world trade. It has great potential to develop economic activity and prosperity in Russia’s far north. It must be done sustainably to protect the pristine waters of the Arctic,” said Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem.

Andrey Severilov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Fesco said: “We are delighted to be working closely with a company such as DP World that is handling roughly 10 % of the global container traffic. We thank our partners and personally thank His Excellency Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem for this unique opportunity.”

The berth in Vladivostok is part of the infrastructure needed for full development of the northern route. Under the plan cargo will be brought to Vladivostok by feeder ships and rail from countries in East Asia and loaded onto Arctic-class container ships. Murmansk will be further developed as a transshipment hub in the west to connect cargo to ports in North- Western Europe. DP World’s feeder operations will serve both Vladivostok and Murmansk offering faster and cleaner cargo transport solutions to customers and improving supply chain resilience. The Northern Sea Route will allow DP World to continue to offer customers end-to-end logistics solutions.

A record 33m tonnes of cargo was carried along the route in 2020. President Vladimir Putin has set a target of 80m tonnes by 2021. The project cuts some 4,000 nautical miles from voyages between East Asia and North-Western Europe, cutting shipping time by around two weeks.

Empty containers are piling up at a rapid rate in US West Coast ports as congestion reaches an all-time high.

Marcus Hand | Sep 08, 2021

According to Container xChange’s container availability index (CAx) there has been a 60% increase empty containers available at the Port of Los Angeles in August this year compared to August 2020.

The index for the Port of LA is at 0.88 and 0.90 for a 20-foot container and 40-foot container respectively, while a value of 0.5 is considered to be in balance. This is the highest level of the container availability index at the port in the last three years.

“Our CAx (container availability index) data reveals 60% increase in the inbound outbound ratio at the ports of US West Coast, surpassing the pre-covid levels, indicating that there is excessive stress on the ports, and therefore indicating further congestion is expected in the coming months as we approach the holiday season in the later part of the year,” commented Dr. Johannes Schlingmeier, Co-founder and CEO, Container xChange.

With over 40 container ships queued up in San Pedro Bay to enter the ports of LA and Long Beach the imbalance of empty containers between where they are required in Asia and are currently available in the US West Coast is only set to get worse. Meanwhile for US importers it means yet more delays.

Christian Roeloffs, co-founder and CEO, Container xChange, said: “It also indicates that in the coming months, which are the most crucial months for the industry, there will be higher demurrage and detention charges, higher spot rates and surcharges and intermodal delays before it finally settles.”

Abu Dhabi-based self-elevating support vessel (SESV) operator, Gulf Marine Services, has hired Lloyd’s Register (LR) to install a new cloud-based Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system developed by Hanseaticsoft.

Paul Bartlett | Sep 07, 2021

The German software company’s Cloud Fleet Manager, which is provided on a software-as-a-service (SaaS) basis, will provide the offshore operator with scope to upgrade internal procedures, such as crew and inventory management, which are currently manual processes. Hanseaticsoft is a subsidiary of LR.

London-listed GMS operates a fleet of 13 self-propeller SESV currently engaged in a range of offshore oil and gas platform refurbishment and maintenance activities, well intervention, wind turbine maintenance, offshore energy platform installation and decommissioning, and wind turbine installation.

In a statement, GMS said that “the cloud-based single source of truth and applications that are optimised for different departments would increase collaboration and streamline processes. The SaaS system can be easily integrated and does not need additional hardware installations or extra IT staff to manage and maintain it.

“The integration of this new software solution represents another efficiency-improving step by GMS, which further enhances our client offering,” said GMS Executive Chairman, Mansour Al Alami. “With utilisation and the contracted backlog of the company’s vessels continuing to grow, driven by improving market conditions combined with the strength of the GMS fleet, the new solution will be an invaluable tool to allow us to continue to provide a best-in-class service, while undertaking safe operations and helping to further reduce our environmental footprint.”

Meanwhile, LR’s Maritime Performance Services Director, Andy McKeran commented: “We’re delighted to have been selected by GMS. We look forward to supporting their journey towards efficiency, improving collaboration and streamlining processes across the business. Our Cloud Fleet Manager software … centralises all their information and drastically reduces the effort to manage their operations. We remain committed to providing solutions that answer our client’s challenges and to become a trusted adviser to ensure that our clients can operate efficiently.”

The GMS fleet, one of the youngest in the industry, operates worldwide and consists of flexible four-legged units in small, medium and large size categories. As self-propeller units, they do not require tug assistance, thereby saving time and reducing costs when moving between locations.
