German shipping company NSB Group has introduced a new concept of a fully liquified natural gas (LNG)-operated 3500 TEU container vessel with an increased reefer container intake of about 940 FEU.

According to the company, reducing gas consumption and the emission of greenhouse gases was the focus of this concept.

The deckhouse on the forecastle deck was designed to optimize the container capacity and separate the accommodation from the IMO Type C LNG Tanks.

Furthermore, it will be carrying gas for about 5000 nautical miles under full reefer load, on the poop deck.

The vessel will also feature an MGO tank which will be used as a backup in case of LNG shortage.

“A modern dual fuel, 2-stroke, slow speed, single-acting Main Engine with Waste Heat Recovery System and a battery system for peak shaving combined with a Shore Power Connection propel the vessel into a green future,” NSB Group noted.

NSB Group is currently managing a fleet of 58 with an overall capacity of 3,179,893 TEU.

The fleet includes containerships between 1000 TEU and 11,000 TEU, tankers between 37,000 DWT and 105,000 DWT and bulk carriers.

The armed group who seized a tanker off the coast of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has left the targeted ship, the British navy reported.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations revealed that the incident, which was described as a “potential hijack”, was now “complete.”

The group said that the vessel is now safe, without providing any further details.

UKMTO initially reported a “non-piracy” incident on the unidentified ship before updating its description. The incident occurred off the UAE coast, approximately 60 nautical miles from Fujairah.

Maritime security analysts at Dryad Global have identified the ship as the bitumen tanker Asphalt Princess.

The 9,700 dwt tanker is 134 meters long and currently sailing under the Panama flag. The ship’s owner is Dubai-based shipping company Prime Tankers.

The vessel started its voyage at the Port of Khor al Fakkan in the UAE and it was traveling to Sohar, a port on Oman’s northern coast when the incident occurred.

Reuters noted, citing Refinitiv ship tracking data, that at least five ships in the sea between the UAE and Iran updated their AIS tracking status to “Not Under Command” on the same day.

British officials worked on an assumption that Iran was involved in the incident; however, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh denied that Iran played any role.

Wärtsilä has signed a seven-year long-term Optimised Maintenance Agreement to support the operations of two river pusher tugs operating in Northern Brazil. The vessels are owned by Hidrovias do Brasil, a leader in South American river transportation.

Wärtsilä has signed a seven-year long-term Optimised Maintenance Agreement to support the operations of two river pusher tugs operating in Northern Brazil. The vessels are owned by Hidrovias do Brasil, a leader in South American river transportation.

The vessels operate with Wärtsilä 20 engines, often in shallow waters and remote locations. These challenging operating conditions make the planning and execution of maintenance procedures difficult. This agreement, therefore, allows the customer to focus on its core business knowing that the service level is efficient and the long-term costs fully predictable.

Included in the agreement are Wärtsilä’s Data-Driven Dynamic Maintenance Planning and Expert Insight innovations to deliver remote operational and technical support. The service also includes other important benefits, such as an insight to fuel efficiency, maximised uptime with maintenance being carried out on an ‘as-needed’ basis rather than according to a set number of operating hours, spare parts planning and coordination, and personnel training.

“Long-term maintenance contracts guarantee the reliability and availability of the Wärtsilä engines installed in our main pushers. Under this contract we receive technical support from the manufacturer of the engines, parts for preventative maintenance, and remote monitoring of the engines’ performance. Because of the gains it provides when well managed, maintenance is a strategic area for us. Therefore, we identified the need to continue with a long-term contract in partnership with Wärtsilä,” said Ricardo Brandalise, Maintenance Manager, Hidrovias do Brasil

“Optimised Maintenance agreements are part of Wärtsilä’s Lifecycle Solutions offering, and are designed to improve our customers’ business performance and competitiveness. With these agreements, we are able to increase availability and ensure optimal efficiency. The addition of Expert Insight to our lifecycle offering takes predictive maintenance and optimisation to levels never seen before, thus enabling reduced unplanned maintenance and optimised fuel efficiency with a corresponding reduction in emissions. We are pleased to continue strengthening our partnership with Hidrovias do Brasil with this agreement,” said Marcelo Barthaburu, General Manager, Agreement Sales Americas, Wärtsilä Marine Power.

An earlier agreement with Hidrovias, signed in 2017, covers eight river pusher tugs operating in Paraguay.

Russian specialist designer and builder Alekseev’s Hydrofoil Design Bureau yesterday launched the first of a new design hydrofoil to be operated by Russian inland transport operator Severrechflot which ordered four of the type in late 2019.

The vessel is a Meteor 120R type able to carry 120 passengers and having a range of 600km.

“Meteor 120R is a symbiosis of the best traditions of the design school of Rostislav Alekseev and innovative engineering and technical solutions: a new generation wing scheme that allows the vessel to develop cruising speeds of up to 80 km/h, while maintaining comfort for passengers, modern hull materials, an integrated vessel control system using artificial intelligence, serving the safety of navigation. This is an “intelligent” ship with a modern comfortable cabin with climate control, multimedia systems, a beautiful panoramic view and a café-bar in the aft part, “said Georgy Antsev, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Alekseev’s Hydrofoil Design Bureau.

The construction of the Meteor 120R type marks another step in the resumption of serial production of hydrofoils in Russia. Previously, we could only dream of resuming the serial production of hydrofoils, but today this is a reality: 11 Valdai have already been launched, they run in three regions of Russia, including navigation in six directions is open in the Nizhny Novgorod region. Today we are present at the descent of the lead vessel “Meteor 120R”, and there are already plans for the further development of the direction of hydrofoils, “said the Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region Gleb Nikitin.

“New vessels make it possible to launch new routes, increase the transport accessibility of settlements in the regions. The design of the vessel was held within the framework of the state program for the development of shipbuilding and equipment for the development of offshore fields until 2030 with the support of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia. Renewal and replenishment of the passenger fleet in the regions with these new, modern vessels became possible thanks to the state program of preferential leasing. When creating the Meteor, all the wishes of passengers and operators of such vessels were taken into account. It turned out to be a modern, safe and comfortable vessel for passengers and crew.” – said the Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov.

The German frigate Bayern (BMVg)

PUBLISHED AUG 3, 2021 8:39 PM BY THE MARITIME EXECUTIVE

On Monday, the German Navy dispatched the frigate Bayern on a long voyage to the South China Sea, showing its support for the multinational effort to offset Chinese expansionism in the region.

The trip will take seven months, and it will see Bayern joining a NATO exercise in the Mediterranean and the EUNAVOR anti-piracy mission off Somalia on her way east. She will call in Vietnam, South Korea, Japan and Australia in addition to transiting the South China Sea. China is not currently on Bayern’s itinerary, and Chinese officials have said that they will not host the vessel unless Germany clarifies the frigate’s mission.

Unlike U.S. Navy vessels, which periodically challenge Chinese maritime claims by passing close to Chinese-occupied islands, the Bayern is expected to stay near established shipping lanes. It is also expected to steer clear of the Taiwan Strait; U.S. Navy transits of the strait are widely interpreted as a message of support for an independent Taiwan, and they routinely draw criticism from Beijing.

“It’s good to talk about our values, but it’s even better to [show] it,” said German Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer in a statement. “Today the frigate Bayern is heading towards the Indo-Pacific – a sign of stability, prosperity and a rule-based, multilateral order . . .  Together with our valued partners in the region, Germany is showing [its] presence in the Indo-Pacific and sets an example of solidarity.”

While Bayern’s mission is to send a message of opposition to China’s sweeping maritime claims, some defense observers have expressed concern that the deployment could end up having the opposite effect. If Bayern should call in Shanghai before transiting the South China Sea – as has been previously discussed – it could be interpreted as a sign that Germany was asking Beijing’s permission before entering contested waters.

“It illustrates [that] European naval deployments can actively undermine rather than help uphold international law or support a strategy of deterrence against China – in fact, they can even go so far as to strengthen Chinese territorial claims in Asia. Everything depends on the detail,” wrote Chatham House senior fellow Hans Kundnani and Prof. Michito Tsuruoka of Keio University in a recent editorial.

refugees in distress in the Mediterranean SOS Mediterranee NGO

PUBLISHED AUG 3, 2021 7:10 PM BY THE MARITIME EXECUTIVE

For the second time in a month, an NGO undertaking rescue missions for migrants and refugees in the Mediterranean is calling for help as the deck of its vessel is again packed with individuals it has rescued in the past few days. SOS Mediterranee said that it urgently needs to disembark 553 survivors who are experiencing high heat and unsafe conditions on the deck of its vessel. Last month Italy provided a safe port for the vessel which had 572 survivors aboard after it warned that it was running out of food and water.

Earlier today, the Ocean Viking, a 2,600 dwt tug chartered by the NGO for its rescue missions requested urgent assistance. The Italian coastguard responded to the call and took aboard a pregnant woman and her partner after it was determined that the woman required immediate medical attention. The NGO thanked the Italians while noting the vessel remains packed with the other survivors.

Yesterday, the NGO Seawatch issued at least three additional mayday distress calls. They reported that at least three boats had been spotted and were believed to be in danger. In addition, three dinghies were believed to be in immediate danger.

The Ocean Viking’s current mission began on July 24 when the vessel departed Sicily to resume its search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean. The vessel had been in Sicily since July 9 when the Italian authorities responded to the prior urgent call for assistance. The vessel was permitted to dock in Augusta and offload 573 individuals that had been rescued in the first five days of July. After a two-day operation to land the refugees, the crew of the Ocean Viking underwent a 10-day quarantine.

After two unsuccessful searches, the Ocean Viking completed four rescues all on July 31 bringing aboard a total of 196 people. Later that same night, they undertook one of their largest rescues working in coordination with Seawatch and Resqship. A total of 449 survivors were taken from a large wooden boat that was taking on water and loaded aboard the Ocean Viking and SeaWatch3. On August 1, an additional 106 people were rescued from another wood boat that was also in distress.

The situation aboard the Ocean Viking was reported to be deteriorating as the vessel crammed with refugees has encountered increasing swells and stifling heat. Medical Team Leader Francisca issued a report saying, “Many are suffering from seasickness today. Some have fainted on our deck due to the heat and the ordeal they lived through. Some obtained injuries during the crossing, many suffer from body pain. We continue to assess, treat and monitor patients, but all survivors need to disembark in a place of safety as soon as possible.”

SOS Mediterranee and the Ocean Viking are once again requesting from the maritime authorities a place of safety to land the individuals that have been rescued in the past few days. The International Federation of the Red Cross joined with the NGO launching a campaign for support in mid-July, but the organizations continue to say that the international authorities need to agree to and support an organized rescue operation in the Mediterranean.

PUBLISHED AUG 3, 2021 7:05 PM BY THE MARITIME EXECUTIVE

The IMO’s Legal Committee has reported an alarming uptick in the number of seafarer abandonment cases since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic last year. Between January 2020 and this April, the ILO/IMO joint database on abandonment recorded 111 new cases. 85 of these  cases in 2020 and the balance of 26 cases occurred in the first quarter of 2021. Only 46 have been resolved since, and 27 more have been reported since April.

The International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) reported a slightly lower number, with 53 vessels and about 850 seafarers affected in 2020. Going by the IMO’s 85-vessel count for the year, more than 1,300 seafarers were affected.

The committee noted two positive outcomes in high-profile cases. The crew of the bulker Ula, who staged a hunger strike in February to protest their continued captivity in the harbor at Shuaiba, Kuwait, have been repatriated. One crewmember had been on board for more than two years, and all had been on the ship for more than one year. However, their wages have not yet been paid.

Advocates have also won freedom and repatriation for the master of the Kenan Mete, who was effectively held hostage in a hotel in Egypt after a court declared him the “judicial guard” of the vessel. The owner had abandoned the ship and her 25 crewmembers, and the captain was the last person left. After intervention by the ITF, Egyptian officials allowed him to fly home.

In response to the ongoing crew change crisis and the rising number of abandonment cases, the Legal Committee established a working group to draft practical guidelines, including a proposed outline to cover the legal framework, responsibilities and procedures for port and flag state authorities.  The committee also discussed a proposal to establish a a Seafarers Emergency Mutual Fund to support crewmembers impacted by abandonment.
