Kongsberg Digital, a subsidiary of KONGSBERG, and Shell Marine signed an MoU during SMM Hamburg to work together on new ways to accelerate decarbonisation initiatives and assist the energy transition in the maritime industry.

The MoU will see the companies develop joint solutions, enhancing their service portfolios, and identifying pilot projects to test their combined capabilities.

“The energy transition for the maritime sector will involve new types of fuel, new technology and new ways of working, as the industry pushes towards decarbonisation. KDI and Shell both see the urgent need to support their maritime customers through the energy transition. In the short run, the marine industry needs to operate vessels in a more efficient manner through increased uptime and reliability, while ensuring environmental compliance,” said Anders Bryhni, VP digital ocean applications in Kongsberg Digital.

The new partnership will see KDI bring its digital data infrastructure solutions, applications and open ecosystems together with Shell’s portfolio of technical and digital services, which improve performance and reduce running and maintenance costs for its marine customers.

Shell and Kongsberg have long worked closely to optimise vessel efficiency and operations, and I am pleased that this MoU further underscores this collaboration,” said Marcus Schaerer, general manager services & technical Shell Marine.

The MoU strengthens a longstanding partnership between KDI and Shell in the energy sector. KDI provides Shell with its digital twin Kognitwin on several Shell assets, including the Nyhamna Gas facility in Norway.

With the signing of the MoU, the two parties will cooperate proactively towards enabling high-quality training which satisfies the international standards to be provided and thus a competent local labor force to be supplied to the growing offshore wind industry in Japan as well as in APAC region.

Based on its expertise and experience in ships’ survey and certification, ClassNK will work with Maersk Training to develop a set of guidelines including the safety of boat transfer, which is one of the most frequent HSE risks across the offshore wind sector. Furthermore, research will be carried out on seafarer training for ammonia-fuelled vessels jointly.

Australian hydrogen shipping start-up Provaris Energy has teamed up with French renewable energy developers Total Eren to transport green hydrogen to Asia and Europe, where the application of Provaris’ compressed hydrogen storage and transport supply chain can be applied. Provaris is developing a 26,000 cu m compressed hydrogen carrier dubbed H2Neo, which it hopes will be constructed in mid-2023, pending approval. 

Total Eren is specialized in the development, financing, construction, operation and maintenance over the long-term of renewable energy power plants (mainly solar and wind) worldwide. In particular, Total Eren is working on several large-scale green hydrogen projects globally, including Latin America (Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia), in Australia, and in Africa (Morocco, Egypt and Mauritania). 

A memorandum of understanding will provide a framework for Provaris and Total Eren to work together on the identification and assessment of green hydrogen projects currently developed by Total Eren that can utilize Provaris’ GH2 Carriers for bulk transport of compressed hydrogen in markets that require to import volumes of pure gaseous green hydrogen.  

The agreement includes the development of solutions that will meet the requirements of off-takers, port authorities, shipyards, and ship operators.

It also provides Provaris with a key partner to facilitate and accelerate the delivery of the first pure gaseous hydrogen (GH2) carrier, including investigation of a future financing scheme, as well as opportunities for an in-house developed compressed floating hydrogen storage solution (pictured below).

“Our discussions with Total Eren over time have identified a strong alignment on the commercial and technical benefits of compression for the storage and transport of hydrogen,” Provaris managing director Martin Carolan said. “We look forward to a closer relationship to facilitate and accelerate the delivery of the first fleet of GH2 carriers.”

At Gastech 2022, DNV signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with maritime industry technology leaders HHI, AVIKUS, and Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR) to collaborate on autonomous ship technology developments.

The Hyundai intelligent Navigation Assistant System (HiNAS 2.0) is an AI-based navigation solution that covers all steps for voyage from detection to situation analysis, planning, and control. The system assists in safe navigation by displaying augmented reality (AR) images of detected ships and navigation information. Furthermore, it controls heading and speed for collision avoidance and route tracking. Developed by AVIKUS, a subsidiary of Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), the system creates and controls optimal routes for collision avoidance in the ocean, aiming to reduce crew fatigue and increase fuel efficiency.

The multilateral MoU includes a joint study to deploy autonomous navigation systems on-board ships to increase technology uptake by the industry and flag states. During the project, AVIKUS, HHI, and LISCR will actively contribute to developing autonomous maritime solutions that comply with DNV rules on autonomous operations, where AVIKUS aims to obtain an Approval in Principle (AiP) from DNV as well as the Liberian Flag Administration.

“Through this co-operation, we believe that we will gain momentum to move forward to the next stage of autonomous ship technology. We will try to maintain the leading position in this technology and to increase competitiveness in the future ship market,” said Won Ho Joo, CTO of HHI.

“This joint development is meaningful in that it includes shipyards, autonomous solution companies, classification, and flag states to commercialise autonomous navigation solutions. As of the first quarter of 2022, the Paris MoU 3-years rolling Port State Control inspections record of Almi Tankers is flawless. All PARIS MoU Port State Control inspections on board our fleet from European and other MoU ports have been completed with zero (0) deficiencies.

It is worth pointing out that during the same period, for tanker vessels only, 3353 Paris MoU inspections were conducted which resulted in 4060 deficiencies, indicating an average of 1.2 deficiencies per inspection.

During the past decade, Almi Tankers achieved an average of 0.02 deficiencies per inspection, compared with 2.44 for the industry.

Paris MoU is an organisation that consists of twenty-seven (27) participating maritime Administrations and covers the waters of the European coastal States and the North Atlantic basin from North America to Europe. Annually more than 17,000 inspections take place on board foreign ships in the Paris MoU ports by the organisation, with the aim to ensure that these ships meet international safety, security, and environmental standards, and that the crew members have adequate living and working conditions.

Taiwan is to inspect 202 foreign ships entering the country’s seven large commercial ports between this month and November in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control in the Asia-Pacific Region, also known as the Tokyo MOU, the Maritime and Port Bureau said yesterday.

For the Tokyo MOU, a port state control organization was established, which is composed of representatives from 21 member authorities, the bureau said.

The organization’s main purpose is to establish an effective and consistent port state control regime in the Asia-Pacific region, the bureau said.

Container ships are docked at the Port of Keelung on Aug. 6.

A concentrated inspection campaign (CIC) is also launched annually among member authorities to eliminate substandard shipping, protect the maritime environment and safeguard working and living conditions for seafarers, it said.

Taiwan is not a member of the International Maritime Organization, but nevertheless abides by the maritime safety regulations stipulated by international organizations, the bureau said.

The focus of this year’s campaign is to see whether seafarers carry qualification certificates, whether the number of crew members meets the minimum safety quota for onboard seafarers, and whether crew members can present health examination certificates and rest hour records, the bureau said.

The three-month maritime safety campaign would start today at seven international commercial ports across the country, it said.

“Our goal is to conduct random onboard inspections on 202 foreign ships in the next three months,” the bureau said, adding that the goal was set based on the number of ships arriving in Taiwan last year.

“We want to remind shipping firms and shipowners that they need to confirm the qualifications of the seafarers they have recruited and ensure that work shift schedules are friendly to seafarers,” it said.

During the CIC period, ships found with unqualified seafarers on board would be retained by commercial port authorities until improvements are completed in accordance with Article 60 of the Commercial Port Act (商港法), the bureau said.

Because of the annual inspections, Taiwan has been on the Tokyo MOU’s white list for five years in a row, which has greatly enhanced the efficiency of shipping fleets by lowering the frequency of inspections when they arrive in other countries, the bureau said.

“We have worked with CR Classification Society to offer seminars to shipping firms on how they should prepare for the CIC this year,” it added.

German shipbuilder Flensburger Schiffbau Gesellschaft (FSG) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Canada’s Oceanex Inc. that will see the two companies develop a highly efficient climate neutral ConRo (container RO/RO) vessel.

Oceanex Inc. provides intermodal transportation services to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador and the new ConRo design will be critical to its future vessel replacement planning for its current three-ship fleet.

The MoU was signed during a high level German trade mission to Canada in which FSG managing director Philipp Maracke participated at the invitation of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. It was co-signed by Maracke and Oceanex executive chairman Captain Sid Hynes in the presence of the German Federal Minister Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Dr. Robert Habeck and Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson.

Together, the partners intend to investigate the utilization of alternative fuels, such as ammonia, methanol, synthetic and biofuels as well as hydrogen, and the technologies based on them in relation to Oceanex’s Atlantic Canada operational area. The central approach of FSG is a comprehensive life-cycle analysis that links long-term economic and ecological perspectives already in the planning stage.

“As a shipyard, we have ambitious goals to become a major pillar of the energy transition. FSG has already positioned itself as an innovation leader for low-emission ship designs in the past,” says Maracke. “Building on our references and expertise, we want to be a driver when it comes to energy transition in shipping.”
