Norwegian RoRo shipping company Höegh Autoliners has decided to launch a private placement of new shares and list the company’s shares on Euronext Growth Oslo in order to accelerate decarbonization investments.

As informed, the private placement is expected to raise gross proceeds in the region of NOK 1 billion (about $115 million). The net proceeds will primarily be used to equity finance the delivery of four Aurora-class vessels.

“We are very pleased to announce our intention to list Höegh Autoliners and open the next chapter in its history. By raising capital and listing the company, we will be able to accelerate investments and further strengthen our customer service and leading position in decarbonisation and cargo efficiency,” Leif O. Høegh, Höegh Autoliners Chair, commented.

Höegh Autoliners recently launched a transformational newbuilding program to accelerate the company’s green transition. It has entered into a letter of intent (LOI) with China Merchants Heavy Industry (CMHI) to build a series of multi-fuel and ammonia-ready Aurora-class vessels.

German propulsion system manufacturer Schottel has been contracted to supply azimuth thrusters for hybrid-electric ferry Altera owned by Finnish ferry operator FinFerries.

As informed, the propulsion system of the eco-friendly ferry will consist of two electrically driven Schottel EcoPellers type SRE 430 (950 kW each). The SRE features a propeller diameter of 2.35 meters. The azimuth thrusters are ice-strengthened according to Finnish-Swedish Ice Class 1B. Thanks to this, the ferry can be deployed in the icy waters of Southwest Finland at any time of the year.

Equipped with a battery capacity of 2 x 0.6 MWh, Altera will service its route using only its own batteries which are charged directly from shore while loading and unloading. Diesel generator sets will serve as a backup source of power, according to the company.

Altera measures 100 metres in length and 17 metres in width and provides space for up to 90 cars and a maximum of 375 passengers.

The electrically powered hybrid ferry, which is scheduled to enter operation in 2023, is currently under construction at the Polish shipyard Crist. Altera will be able to sail solely on battery power charging its batteries with renewable electricity.

“Altera means proud, excellent, which is well suited as we are proud of this technology and are thrilled to welcome another eco-friendly electrically powered ferry to Finland. By supplying efficient and sustainable EcoPellers, SCHOTTEL makes a significant contribution on our path towards a greener future,” Mats Rosin, CEO of FinFerries commented.

Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has become the first shipbuilder to receive an Approval in Principle (AiP) under Bureau Veritas’ Cyber Managed Prepared notation. SHI’s design of a LNG carrier has formally received the AiP from BV.

Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has become the first shipbuilder to receive an Approval in Principle (AiP) under Bureau Veritas’ Cyber Managed Prepared notation. SHI’s design of a LNG carrier has formally received the AiP from BV. The certificate was delivered to the Vice President of SHI, Hyun Joe Kim, by the Chief Country Executive of BV Korea, Christophe Capitant, at a ceremony on SHI R&D Centre in Daejeon.

SHI has received the AiP for its SVESSEL smart ship solution, which focuses on complete digitalisation of the ship and its applications to efficiently and safely assist operations. BV’s Cyber Managed Prepared notation confirms the design’s compliance with the industry’s best practices and IMO 2021 requirements in terms of cyber security.

SHI’s advanced cyber security technology has already been proven and deployed on a number of ships built by SHI. The company is confident that the SVESSEL solution will strengthen the company’s success and position in the marine and offshore market, which is moving towards autonomous ships in the future.

Hyun Joe Kim, Vice President of SHI, said, “Strong cyber security is key to enable shipping to move on to the next level of digitalized and connected ships. For years, SHI has been at the forefront of innovative design and equipment, helping our clients address the risk of cyber attacks while complying with the current rules and regulations. All the efforts and good collaboration with BV’s expertise led to the issuance of this Approval in Principle. We look forward to continuing our collaborative research with BV, so we can keep leading the way and support shipping’s evolution towards increased autonomy.”

Australia-based mining giant Fortescue Future Industries’ (FFI) Chairman Dr Andrew Forrest AO has called for a net zero 2040 target to be embraced by the entire shipping industry during an address for ‘Transport Day’ at COP26, while providing the technical leadership in large shipping to support the target.

FFI’s Green Fleet Team is moving quickly to convert the 75m offshore vessel, the MMA Leveque, in collaboration with MMA Offshore Limited, over the next 12 months so it can run almost totally on green ammonia. The company believes this brings the shipping industry much closer to becoming carbon neutral well before 2040 with only entrenched industry practices slowing global progress of carbon neutral shipping.

The MMA Leveque will run on green fuel and is part of Fortescue Metal Group’s broader fleet of trucks, locomotives and ships all undergoing technical transition to operate on green fuels. No details of the conversion of the vessel have been revealed. The ship is currently powered by four Cummins KTA50-D(M) engines in a diesel electric configuration.

With cargo owners increasingly turning their attention to supply chain emissions, Norwegian ship operator Klaveness’ digital arm has partnered with ZeroLab to make emissions from seaborne transportation readily available to charterers by launching an emissions monitoring tool.

With cargo owners increasingly turning their attention to supply chain emissions, Norwegian ship operator Klaveness’ digital arm has partnered with ZeroLab to make emissions from seaborne transportation readily available to charterers by launching an emissions monitoring tool.

The emissions monitoring tool in CargoValue enables cargo owners to view total emissions by commodity, volume, and ship type. The tool, previously piloted with a major charterer in the aluminium industry, enables cargo owners to quickly assess how their seaborne supply chain emissions align within the Sea Cargo Charter trajectory – a global framework for aligning chartering activities with responsible environmental behaviour.
